SCOPE : concept development
YEAR : 2018
In response to the Land Art Generator Initiative design competition, the Binary Canopy reimagines public art by blending computational design with functionality. Inspired by the UAE’s dune topography, it uses parametricism to create a site-specific solar canopy that harmonizes with its environment. Using an AI agent (evolutionary algorithm), the undulating canopy is generated as a result of hundreds of thousands of iterations, with the selected design being the most efficient at capturing solar energy. Serving as both an energy-generating sculpture and a cooling shelter for an oasis and botanical gardens, the canopy exemplifies the fusion of form, function, and sustainability. Its undulating design optimizes sunlight capture, setting a new standard for multifunctional canopies that balance aesthetics, renewable energy, and ecological impact.
