In response to a call for ideas competition, The Orchid Pavilion is designed based on the following three principles: simplicity, sustainability, and beauty in imperfection (or wabi-sabi). The design mainly draws inspiration from the orchid itself, traditional Japanese architecture, and the existing pavilions at Casa Wabi. Orchids usually grow out symmetrically reflecting the beauty and complexity of nature. The double symmetry and curvature of the proposed pavilion is therefore designed as an ode to the beauty of nature reflected in the orchid’s petals. With that in mind, the typical inward curving overhang of traditional Japanese architecture also inspired the geometry of the Orchid Pavilion’s roof, considering the foundation’s ties to Japanese culture. Moreover, employing the in-situ concrete columns and designing with the existing constraints pushes for the sustainability of the pavilion with the goal of minimizing the Carbon footprint of the project.
